Giant Birthday Cookie

A couple of weeks ago, it was my boyfriend’s daughter’s 4th birthday. She’s a very picky eater, so I asked her ahead of time if she wanted cake, cupcakes, cookies, or brownies for her birthday celebration. She picked chocolate chip cookies.

I knew from past attempts at cookie decorating that she loves mini M&Ms, and plain chocolate chip cookies seemed less festive to me, so… I decided to make a giant chocolate-chip-and-mini-M&M cookie! That way I could decorate it like a cake and make it all very birthday-ish. I knew it was a risk to change how a cookie looks by making it huge, not to mention adding frosting, because this is a girl who won’t eat a new type of pasta noodle because it looks different! I went for it anyway.

I figured the flowers would hold up the birthday candles. …Yes, those are supposed to be flowers. Clearly I need some more practice with my decorating tips! Not terrible for a first go, but not what I was picturing in my head, either.

What I completely failed to do was remember that I’d used up all my birthday candles on the Super Bowl Cake (because it doubled as a birthday cake, and the guy’s daughter wanted to put ALL THE CANDLES!!! on it). I found some candles from my 30th birthday in the kitchen drawer (notice how I’m skipping over explaining why I still have these more than 4 years later), but these candles were quite tall. When we put them in the frosting to do the whole ceremony, we discovered they were too big and tall for these poor little flowers to hold up. Oops! We needed a little help..

Thanks, Lego Barbarian!!

With the cookie dough left over, I made a very professional-looking happy face cookie for my co-workers. I’m pretty sure it should be in magazines. MY BEST WORK YET!
