King Cake$70/medium cake

King Cake
$70/medium cake

My fellow Southern transplants will understand this one! If you’ve never had a King Cake, think something like a giant, homemade cinnamon roll, but braided rather than rolled. My mother’s side of the family is from the New Orleans area, and this recipe has been passed around among us for decades. Completely homemade, this cake will get you in the Mardi Gras spirit for sure! These cakes take a very long time to make – they cannot be completed on a week night since I have a day job – so please get your orders in as early as you can. Mardi Gras 2015 is February 17th, but King Cakes can be enjoyed throughout the preceding Carnival season – “Jan. 6, the Twelfth Night after Christmas, is the day our Mardi Gras season, hence king cake season, begins.” Medium cakes are $70 apiece.

Spice Tea Mix $8/8 oz jar

Spice Tea Mix
$8/8 oz jar

This family recipe for “spice tea” is a cinnamony-orangey instant tea that has been claimed to cure illnesses. Whether or not it does, we can’t say, but it is packed with Vitamin C. It also definitely hits the spot when you’re down with a cold or just when it’s cold outside! Just mix a couple teaspoons with hot water (adjust to taste). $8/8 oz jar.
